I EAT: Down To Bones @ OUG Old Klang Road, Kuala Lumpur

I chanced upon a posting by a friend on Instagram about an affordable place selling barbeque pork ribs. Now, seeing as “affordable” and “pork ribs” don’t go together where I come from, when the opportunity arose, I went to investigate the curiously named “Down to Bones” at OUG, Old Klang Road.

The shop is a simple, no frills shoplot, serving a fairly limited menu. The star is of course, the Pork Ribs (RM23), pictured here. You get 2 sticks of pork ribs, grilled and then served with their signature sauce, that is piquant and tasty, with a hint of spice. It comes with sides of buttery mashed potatoes and homemade coleslaw that is crunchy and has the right acidity to offset the sweetness of the pork ribs.

On its own, I do find the pork ribs need more seasoning, and feels a little dry. But had with the sauce, it is delicious, and quite affordable. The ribs are fairly meaty, and the portion size is just right for one person.

I also tried the Chicken V 2.0 (RM18) which is a grilled herbed chicken leg, served with garlic butter sauce, mash and coleslaw. While the sauce was tasty with a cheesy taste, I felt the chicken leg a little unexceptional. I’d definitely come here purely for the pork ribs.

To encourage you to eat with your hands, plastic gloves are provided so you can pick the rib and gnaw on it. I enjoy it best eaten this way.

SUMMARY

SERVICE: Service was quite quick. I was there early on a Sunday evening, and we were promptly served

AMBIANCE:  It is air-conditioned inside, but not terribly cool albeit comfortable. Lighting is quite dim, and the tables are well spaced so it does not feel too cramped.

PRICE: The prices were affordable and portions were fair, considering today’s food prices.

TASTE: On its own, I found the pork ribs a little dry and lacked seasoning. But the sauce does make it taste better and like most barbeque joints the secret is in the sauce. I enjoyed the chunky mash potatoes and coleslaw very much. I wasn’t too impressed with the grilled chicken but it might serve well those who aren’t into chowing down on ribs.

Summary

A no-frills barbeque restaurant specialising in pork ribs served with their signature sauce. Each portion comes with a side of buttery chunky mash potato and coleslaw, both of which complement the ribs very well. A place well worth trying as their prices are affordable.
