Some days you need a change of scene. It might explain why hotel staycations are now increasingly popular among city dwellers. While looking for a good, but not wallet-busting hotel experience, I decided on the JW Marriott Hotel Kuala Lumpur.
It is by no means a new hotel. But I read that it’s since been refurbished. The room I was assigned was listed as “Premier” and came with a King-sized bed. I’m not sure if this makes this the regular room.
While the exterior of the hotel does look a little tired, the interior has been given a more modern facelift. The corridors are lined with carpet and have a lovely quiet, with a pale grey and white theme for the walls and doors. Elegant.
The room was large, cool and soothing to the eye. It was very spacious, with a comfortable couch by the window, and a desk and chair for those who need to work.
There was a coffee machine in room – not Nespresso but similar – with a good supply of coffee pods and tea. Tea and coffee making facilities are handy, as well as a hidden minibar.
The TV was very large, with a good number of channels to suit most tastes and entertainment requirements. However, it is set a little offside from the bed, which is rather strange as you end up watching from the corner of your eye.
The bed itself is firm but not hard, and very comfortable. I cannot bear hotel beds that sink when you climb into it. The pillows were numerous although I find them too soft for my liking.
The bathroom is large which is a treat!
I initially found the deep half-bath a little strange, but having been to Japan where such baths are the norm, I actually found it better than a long bath. The water is deeper, allowing you to soak your body comfortably. The water was hot and plentiful, and you can rinse yourself off with the handheld shower attached.
Or if you prefer, step out of the bath for a lovely warm rain-shower instead. It is a little strange having a bench and for the shower to share the space with the bath. When you use the shower, you end up wetting everything in the room. While the wet area is now contained, it can also be dangerous stepping out of the bath.
By contrast to the bedroom area with its soft, warm lighting, the lighting in the bathroom is bright, which I appreciated.
All in all, I’d say that the JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur is well worth a stay. It is located right in the heart of the Bukit Bintang shopping area, just annexed to the luxury shopping Starhill Gallery, and directly opposite the more accessible Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. A short walk away is Fahrenheit 88 and Lot 10. All easily accessible.
If headed to KLCC, you can walk there through Pavilion KL which is linked by way of an overhead walkway. It is just about 20 minutes walk, in fairly comfortable circumstances, and beats sitting in the traffic.
I did not have the breakfast or meals, but food is plentiful around the area so there is no real need to eat in the hotel itself. Just pop across to Pavilion KL where there is a food court, and also many cafes and restaurants to suit all tastes.
If there is one niggling complaint it is this – sound travels along the corridor and into the room. So if you have inconsiderate guests who shout and talk loudly while in the corridor, it can be unpleasant.
It otherwise made for a nice, comfortable little staycation.
