I’d never heard about this supposedly famous and very old pastry shop in Penang until quite recently. On a road trip with friends one day, we stopped by to take a look and try their pastries.
Apparently, the original shop is at Jalan Burma and I can tell you that it’s pretty hard to find because it’s quite a small, unassuming little shop. The bigger one is at Gat Lebuh Armenian offers more parking opportunities and is easier to move around in. That’s where these photos came from.
Ming Xiang Tai is apparently famous for their egg tart, which was previously sold by trishaw around the island. Naturally these days, that is a thing of the past. But I had to try this famous egg tart.
The egg tart wasn’t too bad. The pastry was a flaky pastry and it was fresh from the oven the day I was there. I found the egg custard mixture a little sweet (but I have a fairly low tolerance for sugar) but it was fairly tasty. I wouldn’t say it’s the best egg tart I’ve ever eaten, but it was pretty decent.
The pastry on the side is another of the pastries sold at Ming Xiang Tai. It was filled with meat floss. Quite interesting, if you ask me. There is a fairly wide variety of pastries sold here of the traditional Chinese pastry variety.
A number of them are miniaturised into small handy sizes that you can pop into your mouth in one bite. In general, I found their pastries fairly good if you like traditional style Chinese pastries.
And at Lebuh Armenian is where you’ll find one of the popular Penang murals on the side of Ming Xiang Tai. Representative of the origins of this popular pastry shop I have no doubt.
