I EAT: Restoran Ah Soon Kor @ SS3 Petaling Jaya – Sabah Tuaran Mee and Beaufort Mee

I’d heard of the famed Tuaran Mee and Beaufort Mee, both hailing from the East Malaysian state of Sabah, but I’d never tried them. Never been that far East.

But I recently also found out that there was a shop in the Klang Valley that supposedly dishes out these East Malaysian noodles, and one day, had the opportunity to visit Restoran Ah Soon Kor in the SS3 suburb of Petaling Jaya.

Beaufort Mee (RM8 for single serving) reminded me of the local Cantonese Fried style of noodles, with an egg-drop sauce ladled over noodles. The noodles had a consistency that reminded me of yee mee, and came served with plentiful vegetables, lean pork and some char siew.

While quite tasty, I found it salty. I don’t know if it was because it was the day I went, or if that’s how it normally tastes, but the food generally tasted salty. But how then was the famed Tuaran Mee?

Tuaran Mee (RM8 for single serving) reminded me of ‘mee mamak’ or ‘maggi mee goreng’. Sacrilege eh? LOL The noodles were a bit soft, and is dry fried noodles with egg and topped with char siew and some braised pork, that you mix through before eating.

It was tasty, that much I’d agree, and I enjoyed it a lot except for the fact that I found it far too salty for my taste buds, and it was quite oily so I couldn’t eat very much without feeling cloying after a while. The chilli sauce that’s served deserves mention as it pairs well with the noodles, even if it is very spicy. They also serve other ‘dai chow’ style dishes, so it’s possible to have a proper meal here if you have the numbers.

I might go and have it again if I’m in the area, but I won’t make a special trip as it didn’t tantalize my tastebuds that well.

SUMMARY

AMBIANCE: It’s a non-airconditioned coffeeshop with a simple ambiance.

SERVICE: Service was a little slow and erratic the day I was there, possibly because there were a few other tables with large orders being served.

TASTE: Good, albeit salty. Not having tasted the original style of cooking in Sabah, I have no basis for comparison

PRICE: Reasonable

Summary

A coffeeshop in the SS3 suburb selling Sabah style noodles – Tuaran Mee and Beaufort Mee alongside other dai chow style dishes. I’d never tried the original versions of the noodles so I have no basis for comparison. I found the noodles tasty and different, albeit salty and in the case of the Tuaran mee, oily. I might return to have another try if I’m in the area but I won’t make the special trip there.

TRY THESE: Tuaran Mee, Beaufort Mee
